2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Here I have chosen to compare a picture from a Billboard front cover with the image on my front cover. They are both quite different but have similar characteristics in some way. The picture of Avril Lavigne relates well to the image of my female solo artist on my front cover 'Alex Storm' as they are quite similar. I am going to compare these two photos on how they represent a particular social group. The social group that my magazine is targeting are male and females aged around 16-24 that are interested in rock music and enjoy going to gigs and have a strong passion for this type of music genre.

The picture of Avril Lavigne is quite close up and emphasises her rebellious attitude. Her pose of putting her hands on her hips shows confidence and her open stance reflects her young and open personality. Her facial expression and look is quite seductive although there are many different ways that you could look at it. She could be angry, annoyed or maybe that she just has a bad attitude and she is known for being rebellious so this emphasises this even further. Her hair is also down which shows she is relaxed and likes to have fun and she also has a very stylish appearance like any other rock star. The colour in her hair represents the rock theme clearly as this is a stereotypical feature for a person interested in the music. The dark eyeliner and smoky eyes also highlights her sense of style and 'gothic' look. She also has accessories around her neck to show her interest in fashion and that she fits into the music industry. She represents young teenage girls who love rock music and are quite rebellious and have a 'bad attitude'. My picture on my front cover has similar aspects to this photo. My artist's pose is quite simple but still quite open and confident. Her facial expression is also quite seductive but also shows her 'care-free' attitude. This once again represents the particular social group of the young teenage girl.I made the artist have her hair down with dark eyeliner to show the link to the rebellious teenager who likes rock music. I gave her accessories such as jewellery and a colourful scarf to make a colourful contrast in clothing. The scruffy shirt and black jeans also represent the clothing that a teenage girl might wear. As she is holding the scarf it shows a 'powerful' aspect of her personality. Girls and boys would be attracted to this magazine with this image on as girls would see her as an idol and boys would find her attractive. The specific social group that this media targets though is the teenage and young adult audience. The lighting of the photo also creates a darker attitude of the artist and the setting shows her chaotic lifestyle and personality. These two artists are very similar and will appeal to the same area of social groups. The people and artists in my magazine are quite 'normal' and original, they are not very unique or eye-catching. These two people have similar styles and are quite scruffy but still look stylish. My artist that leans against the wall demonstrates her careless attitude and photogenic body language. Overall I think that these elements of the photos represent this particular social group of the young adults and teenagers and my magazine reflects this throughout.

This video from Avril Lavigne's latest single is a great example of the social group that my magazine targets. She has a great style, she loves going out and having fun, and also loves going to gigs. She has a huge passion for rock music and is a stereotypical 'rock chick'. She also has attitude which emphasises the teenage behaviour.
